Metabolism of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride in Pseudomonas strain B1

Article Abstract:

Hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride was used to enrich a sample of activated sludge, resulting in the isolation of a bacterium putatively identified as Pseudomonas sp. strain B1. Further characterization showed that B1 could grow on alkyltrimethylammonium salts as well as possible intermediates of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride degradation. Based on further biochemical characterizations, a pathway for hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride breakdown was proposed. The pathway involves an initial reduction catalyzed by monooxygenase as well as beta-oxidation of the alkyl chain.

Effect of humic fractions and clay on biodegradation of phenanthrene by a Pseudomonas fluorescens strain isolated from soil

Article Abstract:

The mineralization of phenanthrene in pure cultures of a Pseudomonas fluorescens strain was measured in the presence of soil humic fractions and montmorillonite. Phenanthrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is usually found in contaminated soils. Results show that the acclimation phase is shortened by humic acid and clay, separately, or in combination. Higher mineralization results when humic acid reaches 100 microgram per milliliter. A concentration of 10 microgram per milliliter of humic acid degrades the phenanthrene only when 10 grams of clay per liter is present.

Species-specific oligonucleotides for enumeration of Pseudomonas putida F1, Burkholderia sp. strain JS150, and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 7003 in biodegradation experiments

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize the development of a fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method based on 16S rRNA species-specific sequences for direct counting of aromatic hydrocarbon metabolism species in a mixed culture over time. Polymerase chain reaction products from Pseudomonas putida and Bacillus subtilis were purified using the PCR Wizard kit. Results indicated that the use of 16S rRNA sequences supported the detection of species based on variations in DNA sequence.
