Effects of motorboats and personal watercraft on flight behavior over a colony of common terns

Article Abstract:

The flight behavior of common terns, Sterna hirundo, in response to the presence of a motorboat or a personal watercraft is investigated by correlating the number of birds flying over the colony and the type and distance of the intruding watercraft. Results reveal that racing boats elicit a stronger response and that distance is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the flight response. The implications of these findings on conservation of nesting colonies are discussed.

Aggressive nest intrusions by male Humboldt Penguins

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the influence which aggressive nest intrusions by adult male Humboldt Penguins has on breeding failure within the colony. An 11.1% breeding failure rate due to nest intrusions is discussed.

Characteristics of predators and offspring influence nest defense by Arctic and Common Terns

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the defense of nests by Arctic and Common Terns from predatory Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls. Attacks on eggs and nestlings on Country Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, were monitored.
