Evaluation of structurally different carotenoids in Escherichia coli transformants as protectants against UV-B radiation

Article Abstract:

The study examined the capability of carotenoids in Escherichia coli transformants to protect the bacteria from ultraviolet-B radiation. Endogenous levels of the carotenoids neurosporene and beta-carotene were found to be effective protectants of E. coli against irradiation. The carotenoid zeaxanthin was able to protect the bacteria only against photosensitized ultraviolet-B exposure. Other carotenoids were found to have negligible protective capabilities.

Enhanced carotenoid biosynthesis by oxidative stress in acetate-induced cyst cells of a green unicellular alga, Haematococcus pluvialis

Article Abstract:

The formation of cysts and the enhancement of carotenoid biosysnthesis by acetate and iron addition in the green alga, Haematococcus pluvialis is discussed. Algal strains were subjected to transcriptional and translational inhibitors, active oxygen generating reagents and specific quenchers and scavengers. The importance of hydroxyl radical generated from an iron-involved reaction in the activation of carotenogenesis was demonstrated.

Transformation of the green alga Haematococcus pluvialis with a phytoene desaturase for accelerated astaxanthin biosynthesis

Article Abstract:

A genetic transformation protocol is developed for the metabolic engineering of the green alga Haematococcus pluvialis, which is a suitable source for astaxanthin biosynthesis. The analysis has suggested that the modified phytoene desaturase gene is a useful tool for genetic engineering of carotenoid biosynthesis in Haematococcus pluvialis.
