Evolutionary engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

This article describes engineering of yeast cells that can utilize xylose for aerobic growth by a selection methodology involving selecting for efficient aerobic growth on xylose alone and then slowly adopting them to microaerobic conditions and then switching to anaerobic conditions. Data indicate that after 460 generations yeast cells reproduce stably under anaerobic conditions on xylose.

Metabolic engineering of a phosphoketolase pathway for pentose catabolism in saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

Low ethanol yields on xylose hamper economically viable ethanol production from hemicellulose-rich plant material with saccharomyces cerevisiae. By combining the phosphoketolase pathway with the ald6 mutation, which reduced acetate formation, a strain with an ethanol yield 20 percent higher and a xylose fermentation rate 40 percent higher than those of its parent is engineered.

Molecular basis for anaerobic growth of Saccharomyces serevisiae on xylose, investigated by global gene expression and metabolic flux analysis

Article Abstract:

Global gene expression and metabolic flux analysis are used for studying the molecular basis for the anaerobic growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on xylose. The rate of ATP production limits the growth of the yeast on xylose.
