Exopolysaccharide and poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate coproduction in two Rhizobium meliloti strains

Article Abstract:

The nature of carbon and nitrogen sources effects the coproduction of exopolysaccharide (EPS) and poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) by the M5N1 and Su47 strains of Rhizobium melilot. Bacterial growth in nitrogen-deprived medium is limited, and facilitates EPS production rather than PHB production. Cells grown in glucose show a lag phase in EPS production, which is absent in EPS production from fructose and in PHB synthesis. The lag phase is related to the extracellular conversion of glucose to gluconic or 2-ketogluconic acids.

Stable tagging of Rhizobium meliloti with the firefly luciferase gene for environmental monitoring

Article Abstract:

A fusion expressing luc from the lambda-pR promoter was used to tag the gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Rhizobium meliloti, Pseudomonas putida and Agrobacterium tumefaciens with the firefly luciferase gene, luc. It also found Rhizobium meliloti in the presence of more than 10 to the 5th power CFU per plate, without using selective markers such as antibiotic resistance genes. Notable differences were absent in growth rates of soil survival between the marked and the wild-type strains.

Purification and properties of a glucuronan lyase from Sinorhizobium meliloti M5N1CS (NCIMB 40472)

Article Abstract:

The properties of a new lyase from Sinorhizobium meliloti M5N1CS are described. It is a 20kDA monomer and converts polyglucuronates to 4,5-unsaturated oligoglucuronates. The N-terminus is not homologous to any known protein sequence and the enzyme has been classified as an endopolyglucuronate lyase.
