Exopolysaccharide production in biofilms: substratum activation of alginate gene expression by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Article Abstract:

The activity of an alginate promoter of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was monitored by a reporter gene technology. Chromogenic and fluorogenic substrates from beta-galactosidase were used to demonstrate reporter activity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, uronic acid accumulation and alginate- specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measured the correlation between gene-up expression and alginate biosynthesis. The activation of the specific gene was demonstrated.

Characterization of colony morphology variants isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms

Article Abstract:

The isolation of small, rough, strongly cohesive colony morphology variants from aging Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilms was reported. It was found that the variants displayed many of the same characteristics as the laboratory variants suggesting a link between laboratory and cystic fibrosis.

Reduction in exopolysaccharide viscosity as an aid to bacteriophage penetration through Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms

Article Abstract:

Bacteriophages can penetrate the alginate exopolysaccharide of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by reducing the viscosity of the alginate. Researchers have tried to use bacteriophages to treat Pseudomonas infections in humans.
