Expression of snail2, a second member of the zebrafish snail family, in cephalic mesendoderm and presumptive neural crest of wild-type and spadetail mutant embryos

Article Abstract:

Spadetail embryos mutant for snail2, a gene encoding a zinc finger protein of the Snail family, showed strongly reduced cephalic mesendodermal cell expression and a broader distribution of cells containing snail2 and no tail transcripts in the axial mesoderm. They were also shorter at the end of gastrulation. These results suggest that the spadetail mutation prevents elongation of the embryo and the convergence of the paraxial mesoderm in the trunk and the axial and lateral mesendoderm in the trunk and head at the end of gastrulation.
