Further evidence that the N2-fixing endophytic bacterium from the intercellular spaces of sugarcane stems is Acetobacter diazotrophicus

Article Abstract:

The bacterial strains found in the intercellular spaces of sugarcane stems are morphologically identical to each other and to the bacteria Acetobacter diazotrophicus. The strains are also genetically similar to A. diazotrophicus because the composition of the cellular fatty acid of the strains and of A. diazotrophicus is similar. However, in the strains tested, the formation of hydrogen during nitrogenase activity is unaffected by the concentration of acetylene probably because of the formation of another type of nitrogenase in the absence of molybdenum.

Novel endophytic nitrogen-fixing clostridia from the grass Miscanthus sinensis as revealed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis

Article Abstract:

Clostridial populations and their phylogenetic structures in a strand of the grass Miscanthus sinensis in Japan assessed by a 16s rRNA gene-targeted terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) analysis combined with most-probable number (MPN) counts is discussed. Group II clostridia were found to exist exclusively in M. Sinensis, when phylogenetic populations from M. Sinensis and the soil around the plants are compared.

Response of the endophytic diazotroph Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus on solid media to changes in atmospheric partial O(sub 2) pressure

Article Abstract:

Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus can fix nitrogen at various atmospheric partial O(sub 2) pressures, ranging from 5 to 60 kPa. At high partial O (sub 2) pressures, nitrogenase activity decreases, but returns to normal at lower partial pressures.
