Genetic diversity of the biofilm covering Montacuta ferruginosa (Mollusca, Bivalvia) as evaluated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis and cloning of PCR-amplified gene fragments coding for 16S rRNA

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the phylogenetic diversity of the Montacuta ferruginosa biofilm bacteria. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis method was used to gain a global view of the bacterial diversity of the biofilm while the traditional cloning-sequencing method was used to derive phylogenetic information. Results indicate that some biofilm bacteria could play an important role in the mineral formation processes.

High-resolution differentiation of cyanobacteria by using rRNA-internal transcribed spacer denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis

Article Abstract:

High-resolution discrimination of a variety of cyanobacteria was realized by means of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of sections of the internal transcribed spacer between the 16S and 23S rRNA genes. The applicability of the developed DGGE assays for analysis of cyanobacteria in field samples was demonstrated by using samples from freshwater lakes.

Competition for light between toxic and nontoxic strains of the harmful cyanobacterium microcystis

Article Abstract:

The investigation of competition for light between toxic and nontoxic microcystis strains showed nontoxic strains of microcystis to be better competitors for light than toxic strains.
