Genetic evidence for hybridization of pallid and shovelnose sturgeon

Article Abstract:

Determining the genetic origin of individual sturgeon that are morphologically intermediate to pallid (Scaphirbynchus albus) and shovelnose (Scaphirbynchus platorbynchus) sturgeon, combined previously published mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite data with additional microsatellite data. The results support a hybrid origin for morphologically intermediate individuals backcrossing with the more common shovelnose sturgeon.

Tandem repeat sequence variation and length heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial DNA D-loop of the threatened Gulf of Mexico sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrhynchus desotoi

Article Abstract:

Investigations of Acipenser oxyrhynchus desotoi, a Gulf of Mexico sturgeon, reveals the presence of length heteroplasmy and a linear repetition of mtDNA sequences. There are no variations in DNA sequences, independent of tandem repeats, confirming the possibility of a reduction in genetic variation of this species. Population reduction or change in evolution accounts for this genetic bottleneck.

Characterization of Sox9 in European Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser sturio)

Article Abstract:

The Sox9 gene of Acipenser sturio, one of the most primitive vertebrates was analyzed and no sex-specific differences were observed. Strong evidence for negative (purifying) selection was found and the phylogenetic analyses of Sox9 evolution revealed a basal position for sturgeon Sox9.
