Quantitative dermatoglyphics and population structure in northwest India

Article Abstract:

Dermatoglyphic variations of populations in northwest India are examined to find patterns of ethnic characteristics. Dermatoglyphic variations are then compared with data on genetic markers, and both variations and markers are related to population structure and ethnicity.

Genetic heterogeneity in Northeastern India: reflection of tribe-caste continuum in the genetic structure

Article Abstract:

The gene frequency data for genetic markers, like blood group, red cell enzymes and serum proteins, is studied using the literature for the different populations of Northeastern India with reference to their linguistic, geographic, ethnic and historical affiliations. The results show that the sociological phenomenon of a tribe-caste continuum may be reflected in their genetic structure.

Asian and non-Asian origins of Mon-Khmer- and Mundari-speaking Austro-Asiatic populations of India

Article Abstract:

Samples from 31 tribal populations of India were analyzed for the mitochondrial DNA 9-base-pair deletion/insertion polymorphism and characterized to test the genetic origins of the ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous Austro-Asiatic tribes of India. Results suggest multiple origins of Austro-Asiatic tribes of India, particularly the Asian and non-Asian origins of the Mon-Khmer and Mundari populations, also indicating two different waves of migration of the Mon-Khmer tribes in India.
