Genetic variation of the bloom-forming cyanobacterium microcystis aeruginosa within and among lakes: Implications from harmful algal blooms

Article Abstract:

Suites of lakes in the Southern peninsula of Michigan that vary in productivity were surveyed to measure genetic variation within and among populations of the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The results revealed that 91% out of 53 genetically unique Microcystis aeruginosa clones contained the microcystin toxin gene and the genotypes with the toxin gene were found in all lakes with four harbored both genotypes possessing and genotypes lacking the toxin gene.

Application of real-time PCR for quantification of microcystin genotypes in a population of the toxic Cyanobacterium Microcystis sp

Article Abstract:

Microcystin (mcy) genotypes were quantified by means of real-time PCR, in order to monitor the development of mcy genotypes during the seasonal cycle of the total population. Conclusions reveal that the mean proportion of microcystin genotypes is stable from winter to summer and that Microcystis cell numbers could be used to infer the mean proportion of mcy genotypes in Lake Wannsee.

A lithium-sensitive and sodium-tolerant 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'phosphatase encoded by HalA from the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis is closely related to its counterparts from yeasts and plants

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted on the 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphatase, which is an enzyme and a well-known target of lithium and sodium toxicity and is used for the production of salt-resistant transgenic plants. It is observed that the properties of HalA could help in understanding the structure-function relationship underlying the salt sensitivity of PAPases.
