Gnotobiotic mouse immune response induced by Bifidobacterium sp. strains isolated from infants

Article Abstract:

Gnotobiotic mice and the quantification of pro- and anti-inflammatory-cytokine production and/or gene expression are used for assessing the roles of bifidobacterial strains belonging to different species and isolated from the fecal flora of infants on T-helper 1 ([T.sub.H]1)/[T.sub.H]2 balance. The results have shown that Bifidobacterium's capacity to stimulate immunity is very site specific, but its impact on the orientation of the immune system is strain specific.

Dynamics of vaginal bacterial communities in women developing bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, or no infection, analyzed by PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and real-time PCR

Article Abstract:

A study is done to monitor the qualitative and quantitative changes of vaginal bacterial communities correlated to different infectious diseases such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and candidiasis (CA). Results reveal that the colonization pattern of lactobacilli resembles the CA pattern in patients developing a mixed BV and CA infection.

Characterization and heterologous expression of the oxalyl coenzyme a decarboxylase gene from Bifidobacterium lactis

Article Abstract:

The gene encoding a novel oxalyl coenzyme A (CoA) decarboxylase (Oxc) from Bifidobacterium lactis DSM 10140 (oxc) is identified and characterized. The enzyme activity shown for the purified over expressed protein suggests a potential role for Bifidobacterium in the intestinal degradation of oxalate.
