Harrison Echols (1933-1993)

Article Abstract:

Gessner Harrison Echols Jr took his doctorate in physics and published his first paper on the use of x-ray scattering. He was attracted by the new biology and became a molecular geneticist, in which capacity he published about 150 papers covering a wide spectrum of subjects, including bacterial mating, DNA recombination, replication and repair and proteolysis. He also demonstrated a mode of gene regulation that went beyond the operon model of Francois Jacob and Jacques Monod, providing the first hint that genetic control could be positive. Harrison shared authorship in publications with 42 leading scientists around the world during his 25-year tenure in the University of California, Berkeley.
