Helen Blackwell: The accidental microbiologist

Article Abstract:

Helen Blackwell's scientific career took her into unfamiliar territory thrice from organic chemistry, to chemical biology to plant biology, to microbiology. While finishing her doctoral thesis in organic chemistry, she became interested in biology, from where she moved onto microwave-assisted chemistry and is applying chemical dexterity to bacterial communication looking for molecules that can interfere with quorum sensing and virulence.

Ten steps to better HPLC

Article Abstract:

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) can face a lot of problems such as lines getting clogged, columns not lasting forever, pressure going haywire and many others. Some tips are provided for maintaining and troubleshooting the HPLC, which include changing the buffer daily, using clean samples and using a guard column.

Upgrade your lab to TIRF: Why spend six figures on a new total internal reflection fluorescence system when you can upgrade your existing microscope for just $30,000?

Article Abstract:

Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy is a method that resolves molecular events specifically at or near the cell surface. While a brand new 'turnkey' TIRF systems costs upwards of $100,000, the existing microscope can be upgraded to this capability.
