Hereditary multiple malformation in Japanese quail: a possible powerful animal model for morphogenetic studies

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted wherein a hereditary multiple malformation (HMM), a new mutation of Japanese quail, is controlled by an autosomal recessive gene. Majority of the mutated homozygotes died at the sixth day of incubation and the remaining died by 15 days of incubation. Those who survived to the late embryonic stage had shortened upper and lower beaks that were set apart and show an early embryo-like body shape. Ossification was delayed and morphogenetic abnormalities were observed in the skeleton of the late HMM embryos.

Brown: a plumage color mutation in Chinese painted quail (Excalfactoria chinensis)

Article Abstract:

A second plumage color mutation for the Chinese painted quail in addition to light gray has been observed where the traditional plumage pattern remains unchanged except that the black is replaced with brown. The characteristic is controlled by an autosomal recessive gene unlike the sex-linked brown though the coloration is similar. The brown and light gray mutations are not allelic because offspring all show the wild-type coloration. Other mating combinations are discussed.

Light gray: a plumage color mutation of Chinese painted quail (Excalfactoria chinensis)

Article Abstract:

The presence of lg mutation in Chinese painted quail changes the plumage color to light gray, instead of the dark color present in the wild-type. The stripes present in the neonatal plumage of mutants are lighter in color, with the basic color being a grayish creamy yellow. There is a similarity in the secondary plumage pattern of the wild-types and the mutants.
