High temporal but low spatial heterogeneity of bacterioplankton in the Chesapeake Bay

Article Abstract:

The internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-length heterogeneity (LH)-PCR approach is used for screening rRNA operon clone libraries constructed from bacterioplankton collected from the Chesapeake Bay over two seasons. Studies have shown that environmental parameters with stronger seasonal, rather than regional, dynamics, such as temperature, might determine bacterioplankton community composition in the Chesapeake Bay.

An anaerobic methane-oxidizing community of ANME-1b archaea in hypersaline Gulf of Mexico sediments

Article Abstract:

A study analyzed sediments overlying a brine pool methane seep in the Gulf of Mexico using molecular and geochemical approaches to identify geochemical controls on microbial community composition and stratification. Clone libraries of drsAB genes and bacterial 16S rRNA genes reveal diversified sulfate-reducing communities within and above the sulfate-methane interface.

Stratified communities of active archaea in deep marine subsurface sediments

Article Abstract:

A study characterized archaeal communities throughout the upper 50m of sediment at Peru Margin site 1227 by extraction and analysis of rRNA. Results revealed a 1000-fold variation in rRNA content with depth in the sediment and highest concentrations found close to the sediment surface and in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ).
