Historical events and allelic polymorphism at the gametophytic self-incompatibility locus in Solanceae

Article Abstract:

The results from extensive surveys of self-incompatibility locus (S) alleles in two wild solanaceous species, Solanum carolinense and Physalis longifolia, indicate that historical migration rates have differed significantly between the species. The higher migration rate found in S. carolinense appears to have interacted with the balancing selection at the S locus to result in fewer S alleles being maintained in the species.

Darwin's finch beaks, Bmp4, and the developmental origins of novelty

Article Abstract:

The role of growth factor Bmp4 during the evolution in the beak morphology of Darwin's finches on Galapagos Islands is discussed. The shifts in the heterochronic-timing of ontogenetic events and heterotopic-spatial expression of ontogenetic events result in evolutionary changes to the developmental program of large-versus small-beaked species of Darwin's finch.

A highly divergent mitochondrial DNA lineage of Microtus agrestis in southern Europe

Article Abstract:

The phylogeographic pattern of field vole, Microtus agrestis, in southern and central Europe was examined by the analysis of a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome in 74 specimens from 44 localities. The highly divergent southern mtDNA lineage and its unusual geographic distribution are described in detail.
