Hoxc13 mutant mice lack external hair

Article Abstract:

Hox genes are generally expressed spatially and temporally colinearly related to positions in the Hox complex. In mice, early embryonic Hoxc13 expression is found in the tail and nails. That is consistent with the pattern expected for a paralogous group 13 member. Hoxc13 is expressed as well in vibrissae, and also in the filiform papillae of the tongue and in hair follicles all over the body. The pattern seems not consistent with spatial colinearity. Hoxc13 may be recruited to a common function for nail, hair, and filiform papilla development.

Hox is in the hair: a break in colinearity?

Article Abstract:

In fetal development in mammals, axial structures get specifications through action of the Hox gene family of transcription factors. Slight mistakes can lead to misidentification and homeotic transformation. It has been shown that murine Hoxc13 is expressed in hair follicles all over the body in addition to in vibrissae and the tongue. The locations are too anterior for the position of the gene in the genome. It may be that Hoxc violates the code of colinearity.

Hoxb1 functions in both motoneurons and in tissues of the periphery to establish and maintain the proper neuronal circuitry

Article Abstract:

The uncovered roles for Hoxb1-expressing cells in the formation and maintenance of the VIIth cranial nerve circuitry is analyzed. The study reveals that the molecular program governing the development and maintenance of the VIIth cranial nerve is dependent on Hoxb1, both in the neural crest-derived glia and in the facial branchiomotor neurons.
