Implications of the xylQ gene of TOL plasmid pWW102 for the evolution of aromatic catabolic pathways

Article Abstract:

Toluene, m-xylene and p-xylene are utilized by the O2C2 strain of Pseudomonas putida as energy and carbon sources by metabolizing them to benzoate and methylbenzoates. Cloning and characterization of the genes that encodes the catabolic enzymes in this reaction reveal that the genes are arranged in two blocks, a meta pathway operon and an upper pathway operon. The relative positions of the genes at the TOL plasmid appears to be most closely related to that in plasmid pWW53. The implications of these findings on the evolution of the aromatic catabolic pathways are discussed.

Identification of a region responsible for binding to the cell wall within the S-layer protein of Clostridium thermocellum

Article Abstract:

A research was conducted to identify and evaluate the protomer forming the S-layer of Clostridium thermocellum. Results show that the protomer is a 140 kDa protein that is not covalently bound to the cell wall. A corresponding gene that was cloned and sequenced has an amino acid composition that is comparable with an exocellular glycoprotein. Moreover, cell walls derived from C. thermocellum cells are observed to contain a polypeptide of 209 residues.
