Variation in the human genome

Article Abstract:

The development of sophisticated tools and methods in detecting genetic variation has made it possible for molecular biology to transform population genetics. Population geneticists gathered at a Ciba Foundation Symposium which was held in London, UK, from June 12-15, 1995. Newly acquired findings on genetic variation in human populations were presented. There were also debates on the significance of certain specific variants in relation to health and evolution and scientists assessed the importance of particular markers and methodologies for history tracing of specific populations.

Novartis Foundation symposium: genetics and tuberculosis, Cape Town, November 18-20, 1997

Article Abstract:

The Novartis Foundation met in Cape Town, South Africa for a symposium regarding advances in human and bacterial genetics in the search for new drugs and vaccines for tuberculosis, held on Nov 18-20, 1997. The symposium focused on several technological innovations such as RNA differential display, proteome analysis, in vivo expression technology and signature-tagged mutagenesis that have helped in the development of new drugs. The event also emphasized the importance of bacterial genetics in finding new drug leads.

Evolutionary developmental biology: where is it going?

Article Abstract:

The success of evolutionary developmental biology in shedding certain truths about evolutionary biology as a whole cannot be doubted. However, the field's promise of bridging the gap between 19th-century biology and 20th-century evolutionary biology has been diminished by its tendency to champion the ideas that have contributed to its success and, consequently, discourage efforts at innovation. Specifically, the field's proposed ideas have been criticized as insufficient as they are too 'internalist.'
