The planctomycetes: emerging models for microbial ecology, evolution and cell biology

Article Abstract:

Planctomycetes have been considered a phyla of the domain Bacteria on the basis of similarity of the 16S rRNA oligonucleotides, negative reaction to diphtheria toxin, lipids containing glycerol esters of fatty acids and DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. However the planctomycetes contain peptidoglycan in their cell walls. The lipids of this phyla is similar to that of Bacteria and Eucarya rather than that of Archaea. The 5S rRNA is very short and has an unique type of rrn operon. The ecology, genetic organization and evolution of planctomycetes is discussed.

The isolation of isoagathenediol: a new tricyclic diterpene from the lipids of Rhodospirillum rubrum

Article Abstract:

The lipid portion of the photosynthetic non-sulphur bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum generates a tricyclic diterpene, isogathenediol. This diterpene acts as a membrane fluidity modulator. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum and mass spectroscopy, used to determine the structure of isogathenediol, reveal the existence of six quaternary methyl groups, two hydroxyl groups and two methylene protons.
