Indirect measures of gene flow and migration: F(italic)(subST) does not equal 1/(Nm (ital) + 1)

Article Abstract:

Directly measuring gene flow is not easy and this difficulty has led to the use of indirectly acquired data extrapolated from genetic frequency data. The data are variants of F (italic) (subST), which is a standardized measure of genetic variance among populations. They are used to solve for Nm (italic), the number of migrants successfully going into a population per generation. The mathematical model that underlies the manipulation is based on many assumptions that are unfounded, biologically.

Bootstrap variance of diversity and differentiation estimators in a subdivided population

Article Abstract:

Bootstrap variance of differentiation and diversity estimators in a subdivided population is discussed with the conclusion that some bias is seen in bootstrap methods so direct estimators previously proposed are better. Results of study are used to show that in complicated situations it is necessary to find out whether bootstrap simulations give the right estimates or not, and results are illustrated using data on isozyme polymorphism in sessile oak.
