Inhibition of Escherichia coli biofilm formation by self-assembled monolayers of functional alkanethiols on gold

Article Abstract:

The analysis of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols presenting different functional groups on gold films for determining their resistance to biofilm formation is discussed. Findings reveal that the solvent structure at the interface, the chemorepellent nature of tri(ethylene glycol) (TEG) and the inhibitory effect of TEG on cell motility are the multiple factors that result in the reduction of biofilm formation on surfaces modified with TEG-terminated SAMs.

Extended-spectrum [beta]-lactamase CTX-M-1 in Escherichia coli isolates from healthy poultry in France

Article Abstract:

The widespread diffusion of CTX-M-1 in Escherichia coli in food-producing poultry in France is discussed. Findings revealed that eleven strains were clonally unrelated and had a [bla.sub.CTX-M-1] gene located on transferable plasmids of different sizes and structures.

Improvement of an unusual twin-arginine transporter leader peptide by a codon-based randomization approach

Article Abstract:

A codon-based random mutagenesis method has helped in improving penicillin acylase (PAC) secretion to the bacterial periplasm. The best gain-of-function leader peptides obtained has included replacements in residues from the C-half region of the signal peptide.
