Initiation of anterior head-specific gene expression in uncommitted ectoderm of Xenopus laevis by ammonium chloride

Article Abstract:

The expression of a head-specific homeobox gene, XANF-2, in uncommitted ectoderm may be initiated by ammonium chloride. Ammonium chloride induces expression of XANF-2 in the anterior dorsal region of the Xenopus laevis embryo containing the anterior pituitary gland and cement gland anlagen. Alterations in the intracellular ionic conditions may be responsible for the generation of the anterior head portion.
