Intra- and interspecific comparisons of bacterial diversity and community structure support coevolution of gut micorbiota and termite host

Article Abstract:

Thirty-two termite colonies from various locations are collected to investigate and compare their bacterial gut microbiota, using a combination of terminal restrictions fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis and clonal analysis of 16S rRNA. Results suggest that the majority of gut bacteria are not allochthonous but are specific symbionts that have coevolved with termites and that their community structure is basically consistent within a genus of termites.

Symbiotic fungi produce laccases potentially involved in phenol degradation in fungus combs of fungus-growing termites in Thailand

Article Abstract:

The phenol-oxidizing enzymes in symbiotic fungi and fungus combs from termites belonging to the genera Macrotermes, Odontotermes, and Microtermes in Thailand are investigated. Laccase was the only detectable phenol-oxidizing enzyme and laccase cDNA sequences were identified from the fungus combs, showing the distribution and diversity of laccase genes in symbiotic fungi.

Phylogenetic diversity, localization and cell morphologies of members of the candidate phylum TG3 and a subphylum in the phylum Fibrobacteres, recently discovered bacterial groups dominant in termite gutsoth

Article Abstract:

The specific detection of bacteria, the candidate phylum Termite Group 3 (TG3) and a subphylum in the phylum Fibrobacteres was reported in termite guts. It was suggested that TG3 and Fibrobacteres were autochthonous gut symbionts of various termites and the TG3 members were widely distributed among various other environments.
