Katherine Fitzgerald: Waiting, but not in vain

Article Abstract:

Katherine Fitzgerald was offered a job at Millennium Pharmaceuticals after submitting her thesis on adhesion molecules at Trinity College, Dublin but acquisition of the Millennium forced her to wait to join her job for sometime. This wait however proved fruitful as she in the meantime she finished an absent postdocs' research on Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling and then went on to do research on TLRs and gain success in her chosen research field.

A complementary pathway

Article Abstract:

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare acquired disorder of red blood cells in which an abnormal cell surface molecule leads to premature destruction of the cells. Scott Rollins and his friends worked on CD59 complement inhibitory protein to treat patients of PNH, and they successfully developed eculizumab, a single chain, soluble form of the antibody for treating PNH.
