Linkage disequilibrium at the ADH2 and ADH3 loci and risk of alcoholism

Article Abstract:

Linkage disequilibrium plays an important role in genetic implication of alcoholism. In research of both alcoholics and controls, portions of chromosomes in ADH2 are significantly different between the two groups. However, portions of chromosomes in ADH3 are not notably different between alcoholics and controls. Functional ADH3 polymorphism is driven by ADH2 disequilibrium.

Evidence of positive selection on a class I ADH locus

Article Abstract:

The genomic signature of selection at alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH1B) is described, focusing on that polymorphism and East Asian populations. The results have provided evidence that selection has operated on the ADH1B gene in East Asian populations to increase one haplotype of the gene to high frequency.

Geographically separate increases in the frequency o f the derived ADH1B*47His allele in eastern and western Asia

Article Abstract:

A frequency data report from South and Southeast Asia confirms that low frequency of ADH1B*47His allele in the region between eastern and western Asia and derived allele increased in frequency independently in western and eastern Asia after humans had spread across Eurasia.
