Maintenance of sister-chromatid cohesion at the centromere by the Drosophila MEI-S332 protein

Article Abstract:

Sister-chromatid cohesion is needed for accurate sorting of chromosomes in cell division. The Drosophila malanogaster MEI-S332 protein is on centromeres in meiosis and mitosis. It is needed for cohesion at the functional domains of the MEI-S332 protein. MEI-S332 is detectable first on chromosomes in prometaphase. The localization is independent of microtubules. MEI-S332 has two functional domains that can be separated. Mutations in the domains have intragenic complementation. MEI-S332 seems to assemble into a multimeric protein complex that moves to centromeric areas in prometaphase. It is needed for maintenance of sister-chromatid cohesion until anaphase, not its establishment in S phase.

Nim1-related kinases coordinate cell cycle progression with the organization of the peripheral cytoskeleton in yeast

Article Abstract:

Nim1-related kinases in yeast coordinate the cell cycle with organization of the peripheral cytoskeleton. Hsl1 physically associates with the septin cytoskeleton in vivo and Hsl1 kinase activity depends on septin's functioning as it should. For the fist time it has been seen that cells monitor organization of the cytoskeleton and that a cell cycle checkpoint exists and responds to errors in the peripheral cytoskeleton. Hsl1, Gin4 and Kcc4 have homologs in higher eukaryotes. It appears that Swe1/Wee1 regulation by the kinase class in question is conserved to a high degree.
