Making the right choice - long-range chromosomal interactions in development

Article Abstract:

The yeast species Schizosaccharomyces pombe has the potential to switch mating type as often as every generation, through selective interaction of an expressor locus with either of two transcriptionally silent donor loci. Results of the studies demonstrated that selection of the appropriated donor locus likely occurs through mating-type and heterochromatin-dependent spreading of a protein complex that marks the correct donor locus.

SREBP pathway responds to sterols and functions as an oxygen sensor in fission yeast

Article Abstract:

Studies had identified homologs of sterol regulatory elements binding proteins (SREBPs), its binding partner SCAP, and the ER retention protein Insig in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, named sre1(super +), scp1(super +), and ins1(super +). The characterization of an SREBP pathway in a unicellular eukaryote, the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is presented.

Fus3-regulated Tec1 degradation through SCFCdc4 determines MAPK signaling specificity during mating in yeast

Article Abstract:

Signaling specificity is most important for parallel mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades that control growth in response to different stimuli. It is known that active Fus3 is required to stop the activation of filamentation during pheromone response but no clear details are available on how Fus3 prevents crossactivation.
