Crumbs of comfort

Article Abstract:

Philip James was asked to prepare a paper examining the possible role of a UK food standards agency by the Labour Party Leader Tony Blair. James recommended that the Agency should have an significant role in advising the government on food issues and that it should comprise of ten members mainly from interest groups and consumers. James published his report in May 1997. Many people had felt that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food worked too closely with food companies. The Labour Government may be challenged by interested parties if it tries to introduce the Agency.

Obscene letters in the e-mail

Article Abstract:

Some female users of the Internet have felt forced to leave the network because they have been receiving abusive, sexually explicit messages from men. These messages have been sent to women users of all backgrounds and ages, and have made many of them feel unsafe posting messages on to the network. Some women believe that the men who send these messages see any woman on the network as a feminist and therefore as a target for abuse. Rather than leaving the network, it may be better for these women to enlist the help of a system operator and set up a coping strategy.

Metabolic engineering of poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates): from DNA to plastic

Article Abstract:

The synthesis of Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) in gram-negative and positive bacteria is made possible through the polymerase-encoding mechanism of 18 genes. Although the PHA formation may take various pathways for the creation of different monomers, the genes phbAB, phaJ and phaG have been found to be present in all processes. Under normal conditions, granule formation commences with the action of PHA polymerases on ester bonds.
