Microbial communities associated with geological horizons in coastal subseafloor sediments from the sea of Okhotsk

Article Abstract:

The issue of community variability in a different environment such that of Coastal subseafloor sediment from a system of pelagic clays that is interspersed with layers of volcanic ash is addressed. The data demonstrates that in this environment, two very different geohydrological settings contained different microbial communities and that the differences persisted through a series of layers spanning approximately 1000,000 years.

Enzymatic and genetic characterization of carbon and energy metabolisms by deep-sea hydrothermal chemolithoautotrophic isolates of Epsilonproteobacteria

Article Abstract:

The carbon and energy metabolisms of a variety of cultured chemolithoautotrophic Epsilonproteobacteria from deep-sea hydrothermal environments are characterized by both enzymatic and genetic analyses. The characteristics are consistent with cellular carbon and energy metabolisms and suggest that molecular tools might have great potential for in situ elucidation of the ecophysiological roles of deep-sea Epsilonproteobacteria.

Characterization of C1-metabolizing prokaryotic communities in methane seep habitats at the Kuroshima knoll, Southern Ryuku arc, by analyzing pmoA, mmoX, mcrA, and 16S rRNA genes

Article Abstract:

Samples from three submerged sites at the Kuroshima Knoll in the southern Ryuku arc are analyzed to gain insight into the organisms present and the processes involved in this oxic-anoxic methane seep environment. The results reveal that there is a very complex environment in which methane production, anaerobic methane oxidation and aerobic methane oxidation all occur in close proximity.
