Microbial degradation of chlorinated acetophenones

Article Abstract:

A comparison of retention times and UV spectra with those of standard substances helped classify 4-chlorophenyl acetate, 4-chlorophenol, and 4-chlorocatechol as metabolites. The roles of two collaborating strains were examined by growth experiments and on the level of enzymes. Transient accumulation of 4-chlorophenol when avoided, by the use of phenol-absorbing substances or by careful supplement of 4-chloroacetophenone, the Arthrobacter sp. was able to grow as a pure culture with 4-chloroacetophenone as a single source of carbon and energy. The Arthobacter sp. mineralized mono-, di-, and trichlorinated acetophenones.

A simulation of microbial competition in the human colonic ecosystem

Article Abstract:

Simulation of microbial competition in the human gastrointestinal tract was conducted to represent the competition for space and nutrients by a microcosm of six microbes: Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacteroides ovatus, Fusobacterium varium and Enterococcus faecalis. The model included descriptions of the resource availabilities for glucose, lactose, starch, sorbose and serine, and for model parameters and functions.

Microcosm enrichment of biphenyl-degrading microbial communities from soils and sediments

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine microcosm enrichment of biphenyl-degrading microbial communities from soils and sediments. Bacteria that are representative of long-term biphenyl-adapted microbial communities were isolated using a microcosm enrichment method. Results revel that the microcosm enrichments were strongly dominated by gram-positive bacteria, independent of the pollution history of the original sample.
