Microgeographic song discrimination in a nonterritorial passerine, the Boat-tailed Grackle

Article Abstract:

Male Boat-tailed Grackles are able to discriminate own-colony from foreign-colony song, according to research using playback in the field to test Boat-tailed Grackles for their ability to distinguish between local and foreign songs. It is possible that songs differ between colonies because of geographic variation. Furthermore, the songs of males from a specific colony may converge to produce colony-specific songs. Colony recognition could be achieved by grackles recognizing each male in the colony as an individual.

Breeding biology and productivity of Florida's Crested Caracaras

Article Abstract:

Florida's population of Crested Caracara is thought to be declining because of urban and agricultural development and the population is listed as threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A new study investigates the reproductive biology of the caracara to provide data for conserving and managing the species. The results show a possible link between reproduction and rainfall, with most nesting activity taking place in the dry season.

Is the song of Black Redstart males an honest signal of status?

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates whether the delayed plumage maturation in Black Redstart males in the western Alps is correlated to differential song structure and whether the song of individuals is different in frequency and time. The study shows that Black Redstarts honestly signal their status with both song and plumage. The study supports both the Polyterritorial Deception and the Status Signaling Hypotheses.
