Mixed messages: presentation of information in cystic fibrosis-screening pamphlets

Article Abstract:

A more comprehensive, unified approach is needed for cystic fibrosis educational materials. Information pamphlets sampled from the UK and US lack cohesiveness, presenting conflicting information on issues such as life expectancy, optimism, carrier testing, description of symptoms, neutrality and reproductive options such as abortion. Consistent, accurate and detailed information is necessary to educate the public adequately.

Prenatal screening for cystic fibrosis carriers: an economic evaluation

Article Abstract:

Intrauterine diagnosis of cystic fibrosis has been determined to be an economically viable medical service. Prenatal costs for the disease have been estimated at $1.3 mil to $1.4 mil. Lifetime care and medical expenses for an individual diagnosed with cystic fibrosis was estimated to be approximately in the same range. Factoring in the infrequency of the disorder also lowers costs.

The X chromosome and recurrent spontaneous abortion: the significance of transmanifesting carriers

Article Abstract:

Recurrent spontaneous abortion may be linked to skewed X chromosome inactivation at the molecular level. Since heterozygous carriers of X-linked recessive lethal traits would appear normal phenotypically, identification of these traits is difficult. A molecular model is needed to ascertain trait carriers, eliminating other causes responsible for recurrent spontaneous abortion.
