Mode of action of a lysostaphin-like bacteriolytic agent produced by Streptococcus zooepidemicus 4881

Article Abstract:

The killing action of zoocin A, a lysostaphin-like bacteriolytic agent, produced by Streptococcus zooepidemicus 4881, is attributed to its ability to cleave the peptidoglycan cross-links in the cell wall of sensitive streptococci. Zoocin A also cleaves hexaglycine, but fails to kill streptococci that have direct covalently bonded peptidoglycan cross-links. Electron microscopy shows that treatment of sensitive streptococci by zoocin A results in cytoplasmic disruption and complete rupture of the cell wall.

Cytoplasmic membrane lipoprotein LppC of Streptococcus equisimilis functions as an acid phosphatase

Article Abstract:

The ability of a streptococcal cytoplasmic membrane lipoprotein (llpC), identified with both Streptococcus equisimilis H46A and Escherichia coli JM109 strains, to function as an acid phosphatase is described. Zymographic technique resulted in the expression of lppC gene under its natural promoter in E. coli JM109(pLLP2) showing its phosphatase activity. Moreover, whole cells and membrane fractions from both S. equisimilis and E. coli displayed acid phosphatase activity after whole-cell assays.
