Molecular analysis of the 18S rRNA gene of Cryptosporidium serpentis in a wild-caught corn snake (Elaphe guttata guttata) and a five-species restriction fragment length polymorphism-based assay that can additionally discern C. parvum from C. wrairi

Article Abstract:

The complete nucleotide sequence of the 18S rRNA gene of Cryptosporidium serpentis from an adult wild-caught corn snake, Elaphe guttata guttata, is given based on amplification of a fragment of the gene using two oligonucleotide primers. The sequence has been aligned against other known C. serpentis sequences at this locus. Based on results, an RFLP-based assay is proposed. It can distinguish among five Cryptosporidium species and be used to tell bovine C. parvum from C. wrairi. The identification of species of Cryptosporidium is important for quality control for drinking water.

Improved template preparation for PCR-based assays for detection of food-borne bacterial pathogens

Article Abstract:

Research describes the development of an improved template for polymerase chain reaction based assays for the detection of food-borne bacterial pathogens. Results demonstrate that FTA filters, onto which extracted bacteria are directly applied, provide a convenient, rapid, and sensitive medium for PCR-based detection assays.
