Multidrug resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae: a novel gene, ramA, confers a multi drug resistance phenotype in Escherichia coli

Article Abstract:

Klebsella pneumoniae is resistant to several structurally unrelated antiobiotics. In an experiment, the Klebsiella pneumoniae strain ECL8 developed multidrug-resistant (Mdr) mutants at a frequency of 2.2 x 10 to the -8th power. The mutant was resistant to many drugs, such as chloramphenicol, tetracycline and ampicillin. Cloning of this mutant on Escherichia coli K12, which is similar to K. pneumonia mutant, was done. E. coli is another bacterium with multidrug resistance.

Gene cassettes: a new class of mobile element

Article Abstract:

Gene cassettes are a varied class of mobile elements that are different from transposons and resemble integrating phage and plasmid elements. Most gene cassettes are found in antibiotic-resistant genes. Site-specific recombination, catalyzed by an integrase coded by an integron, allows gene cassettes to move. Gene cassettes generally appear in an integrated form at a specific site in an integron and have a recombinant site containing 59 base pairs.

Definition of the attl1 site of class 1 integrons

Article Abstract:

The class 1 integron codes for site-specific recombinase integrase that catalyzes recombination between specific sites attl1 and a recombination site 59-base element. Data reveal that full attl1 site consisting of 65 base pair is required for the recombination event with a 59-base element site.
