Nest-site relationship among cavity-nesting birds of riparian and snowpocket aspen woodlands in the northwestern Great Basin

Article Abstract:

Several years of livestock overuse and fire suppression have largely decreased the availability of large aspen in riparian habitats throughout the northwestern Great Basin. The study was intended to provide better understanding of the interrelationships among primary and secondary cavity nesters in mountainous riparian and snowpocket aspen woodlands by comparing use to availability of nest sites and evaluating the capacity for nest site competition among species on the basis of quantitative assessment of nest site characteristics.

Urban-nesting of Swainson's Hawks in Saskatchewan

Article Abstract:

The urban-nesting behavior of Swainson's Hawks (Buteo swainsoni) was observed in Regina city, Saskatchewan, Canada, from 1988 to 1991. Five nests of Swainson's Hawk, built in residential and commercial areas and in the city park, were observed. A majority of urban nests were found in conifers rather than the Swainson's typical habitat of deciduous trees. The study showed that Swainson's Hawks selected nest-sites in the city largely due to easy availability of prey squirrels and less interference by people.

Nesting habitat and reproductive success of the southwestern riparian birds

Article Abstract:

Research describing the ways in which the structure of vegetation affects communities of birds in Arizona, United States, is presented. Particular attention is given to nest sizes and location, as well as to causes of nest failures.
