Neurodegeneration: A case of arrested development?

Article Abstract:

The pathogenesis of the neurodegenerative disease Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) in a mouse model is presented, which was prompted by noting an unexpected correlation between disease severity and timing of expression of the mutant protein Ataxin 1 during development. The results have indicated that both the Huntington protein and androgen protein are vital for neurons during development and derailing a transcription program during embryonic development might render adult neurons more susceptible to toxic insults.
