Nutritional requirements and nitrogen-dependent regulation of proteinase activity of Lactobacillus helveticus CRL 1062

Article Abstract:

The synthesis of serine proteinases by Lactobacillus helveticus CRL 1062 is dependent on the peptide content of the medium. The bacterium requires alanine, glycine, asparagine, glutamine, cysteine, riboflavin, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxal, nicotinic acid, and uracil in order to grow in a simplified chemically defined medium.

Identification of a gene cluster enabling Lactobacillus casei BL23 to utilize myo-inositol

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to identify a gene cluster enabling Lactobacillus casei BL23 to utilize myo-inositol (MI). The results reveal that Lactobacillus casei BL23 utilizes Mi carbon source and iolk gene codes for a malonate semialdehyde decraboxylate.

Isolation and characterization of a slowly milk-coagulating variant of Lactobacillus helveticus deficient in purine biosynthesis

Article Abstract:

A slow milk-coagulating variant of Lactobacillus helveticus lacks IMP dehydrogenase, which is necessary for synthesizing XMP and GMP. Adding guanine or xanthine to the milk can restore this variant to the fast milk-coagulating strain.
