Overdominant vs. frequency-dependent selection at MHC loci

Article Abstract:

Overdominant and frequency-dependent selection to maintain polymorphism at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci has been the subject of much discussion. The discussion has been generated by the fact that balancing selection leads to the polymorphism condition. A simulation study conducted concludes that although both can explain polymorphism, they cannot be defined individually. However, more recent studies disprove the simulation study. Stability of the system reflects the main difference between the two selection processes.

Selection and evolution of genetic life cycles

Article Abstract:

A model assuming genetic control over the length of the haploid and diploid phases in a life cycle is used to theoretically investigate the evolution of life cycles passing through both phases. The model allows for selection in either of the two phases where fitness is a function of time. Stability and equilibrium conditions responsiblefor an all-haploid, all-diploid or polyphasic life cycle are included in functions for general survivorship.

Patterns of interallelic divergence at the rabbit b-locus of the immunoglobulin light chain constant region are in agreement with population genetical evidence for overdominant selection

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine evolutionary patterns at the rabbit b-locus based on DNA sequence comparisons. Earlier population studies of the topic showed gene diversity patterns similar to those of the major histocompatibility complex including large allele numbers, high heterozygosity levels and extended allele coalescence periods. Results show that patterns of divergence exist at the rabbit b-locus.
