Oxidation of nitrapyrin to 6-chloropicolinic acid by the ammonia-oxidizing bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea

Article Abstract:

The oxidation of nitrapyrin (2-chloro-6(trichloromethyl)-pyridine) by the nitrifying bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea was reported. Nitrapyrin, in the presence of ammonia, hydrazine or hydroxylamine, was rapidly converted to 6-chloropicolinic acid, in a reaction which might involve ammonia monooxygenase. An acid chloride intermediate unexpectedly bound to membrane proteins could explain why nitrapyrin inhibits the oxidation of ammonia.

Evidence for existence of "mesotogas," members of the order Thermotogales adapted to low-temperature environments

Article Abstract:

Metagenomic evidence is provided for the existence of Thermotogales lineages, which is informally called 'mestoga,' that are adapted to growth at lower temperatures. An analysis of protein sequence composition was conducted, revealing that mesotoga proteins are adapted to function at lower temperature than are their identifiable homologs from thermophilic and hyperthermophilic members of the order Thermotogales.

Structure and sequence conservation of hao cluster genes of autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria: Evidence for their evolutionary history

Article Abstract:

The sequence of the entire hao gene cluster that exists as a single copy in the genome of Nitrosococcus oceani and compare it to the hao gene clusters of Nitrosospira multiforms and Nitrosomonas europaea is presented. The analyses of gene cluster organization and phylogenetic analyses of the protein sequences encoded by genes in the hao gene cluster are described.
