Oxygen protection of nitrogen fixation in free-living Azorhizobium caulinodans: the role of cytochrome aa3

Article Abstract:

Continuous cultures and transient cultures were used to evaluate the growth characteristics of the cytochrome aa(sub 3) mutant and the wild-type strain of Azorhizobium caulinodans. The wild-type exhibited higher growth yield in succinate-limited chemostats while the increase in dissolved oxygen tension resulted to a decline in the growth yield of both mutants. Respiratory protection does not explain the negative impact of oxygen on the growth of A. caulinodans.

Rapid phenotypic change and diversification of a soil bacterium during 1000 generations of experimental evolution

Article Abstract:

Bacteria exhibit parallel genetic adaptations and differences among populations subjected to varied environment. Data show that though phenotypic motiffs differed with respect to substrate utilization, bile salt sensitivity, adhesion properties, and fatty acid composition, variation in colony morphology was greater among bacteria evolved in solid media as opposed to liquid media.

Azorhizobium caulinodans pyruvate dehydrogenase activity is dispensable for aerobic but required for microaerobic growth

Article Abstract:

Research examines the mechanism of adaptation of metabolic energy transduction process in the microaerophilic bacteria when the dissolved oxygen tension is markedly decreased. The Azorhizobium caulinodans uses pyruvate dehydrogenase complex for microaerobic growth but not for aerobic growth suggesting that the energy trasduction of the two processess are qualitatively different.
