Packing for the germy: The role of histone H4 Ser1 phosphorylation in chromatin compaction and germ cell development

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that a conserved histone modification, phosphorylation of Ser1 on histone 4 [H4S1pb] is involved in chromatin compaction during sporulation in yeast, and that it is an evolutionary conserved mark found during Drosophila melanogaster and mouse germ cell development is presented. The study presents the first direct correlation between H4 S1ph and chromatin compaction during spermatogenesis.

Transcriptional blackjack with p21

Article Abstract:

Transcription of p21, a target gene within the p53 pathway, bypasses the requirements for RNA Pol II elongation factors and CTD phosphorylation for its p53-dependent transcription. A variety of transcription factors are present at the p21 locus in response to DNA damage, but not all are required for its transcription.

PER-dependent rhythms in CLK phosphorylation and E-box binding regulate circadian transcription

Article Abstract:

The PERIOD (PER)-dependent rhythms in CLOCK (CLK) phophorylation control rhythms in E-box-dependent transcription and CLK stability, thus linking PER and CLK function during the circadian cycle. It also distinguishes the transcriptional feedback mechanism in flies from that in mammals.
