Polycomb and friends

Article Abstract:

The Polycomb Group (PcG) genes of Drosophila melanogaster is involved in transcriptional regulation since the proteins expressed by the PcG maintain patterns of gene expression. Genetic and molecular characterization of the PcG genes show that the Pc protein interacts with chromatin in a DNA sequence dependent manner. The different PcG proteins regulate other PcG genes and act only at a certain equilibrium level such that aberrant expression of one gene would upset the regulation of the others and mutations may be regulated. Further studies are needed to adequately define the mechanisms of the PcG.

Control of transcription of Drosophila retrotransposons

Article Abstract:

Transcriptional regulation in eukaryotes is controlled by the presence of retrotransposons that code for reverse transcriptase and provide protein products and deoxyribnonucleic acids for the process. In Drosophila melanogaster, different promoter elements with variable structures have been shown to control retrotransposon activity. A distinct amino acid sequence is is essential to this retrotransposon binding activity.

The Y chromosome as a target for acquired and amplified genetic material in evolution

Article Abstract:

The evidence for the Y chromosome as a target for recruited and amplified genome material is presented. The evolution of Y chromosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura has revealed its history of transpositions to autosomes, followed by genomic reorganization in former Y-linked genes, and huge introns and large intergenic spacings are lost.
