Prevalence of overweight and obesity among Guarani-Mbya from Misiones, Argentina

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of overweight and obesity and pattern of fat distribution are assessed in Guarani-Mbya children and adults from Misiones, Argentina. The results present evidence of a marked increase in obesity rates in Amerindians as a part of the process of nutritional transition, revealing that factors such as energy balance, physical activity, and lifestyle could be important contributing characteristics to the trend.

Measurement of leptin in dried blood spot samples

Article Abstract:

An enzyme immunoassay method is presented for quantifying leptin in samples of capillary whole blood collected from a single finger prick and dried on filter paper. Care should be taken to refrigerate or freeze samples promptly and the relative ease of blood spot sample collection might facilitate research on leptin in a wider range of cultural and ecological settings.

Relationship between different subcutaneous adipose tissue layers, fat mass, and leptin in response to short-term energy restriction in obese girls

Article Abstract:

Fat mass and subcutaneous adipose tissue layers in the upper bodies of overweight girls may be the main determinants of leptin prior to weight loss. A sports and diet intervention program reduced leptin levels regardless of reduced adiposity.
