Production of Cry11A and Cry11Ba toxins in Bacillus sphaericus confers toxicity towards Asedes aegypti and resistant culex populations

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to determine the activities of recombinant strains against Culex population that are resistant to binary toxins. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. jegathesan and medellin have been identified as the most promising mosquitocidal strains since both subspecies are able to synthesize proteins. The proteins Cry11Ba1 and Cry11Bb1 have been found to be 10 times more toxic to mosquitoes than even the most active strain of B. thuringiensis.

Improving the insecticidal activity against resistant Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes by expression of chitinase gene chiAC in Bacillus sphaericus

Article Abstract:

A chitinase gene, chiAC, is expressed in an entomopathogenic bacterium, Bacillus sphaericus. Chitinase succeeds in synergizing the toxicity of the binary toxin against mosquitoes and helps in managing mosquito resistance to Bacillus sphaericus.

Various levels of cross-resistance to Bacillus sphaericus strains in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) colonies resistant to B. sphaericus strain 2362

Article Abstract:

Bacillus sphaericus strain IAB-59 is toxic to species of Culex pipiens that are resistant to other strains of B. sphaericus. B. sphaericus has been used as a biological control agent for Culex pipiens mosquito larvae since the late 1980s.
