Productivity of nesting spectacled eiders on the lower Kashunuk River, Alaska

Article Abstract:

Alaskan populations of the threatened spectacled eider duck have been falling since the 1970s but demographic studies are difficult to conduct because their nesting grounds are remote and unaccessible. A new study of eiders on the lower Kashunuk River, AK, between 1991 and 1995, investigates whether low production is hindering population recovery. It shows a wide variation in nest success from year to year, with a sharp decline between 1991 and 1994, and a steep rise in 1995 following the reduction of the predatory mew gull population. Data shows that spectacled eiders in the study area experience high production but there is insufficient data to make conclusions about population growth rates.

Renesting ecology of Northern Pintails on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska

Article Abstract:

Radio telemetry shows that 56% of the wild, free-ranging Northern Pintails renest at least once on the coastal Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Renesting interval is independent of female weight, year or initiation date of the first nests. The weight of females captured on the first nests in early incubation declines with the nest initiation date. Food availability fails to limit the renesting ability of the pintails in coastal tundra.

Survival of northern pintail ducklings on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska

Article Abstract:

Survival rates for 111 broods involving 770 ducklings of the Northern Pintail species found along the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska were observed. Hatching in 1993 produced smaller brood size compared to 1991 and 1992, while survival rate decreased with hatching date at a 0.6% daily rate. The correlation between the duckling survival rates and changes in nesting success generated pintail production fluctuations.
