Protein phosphorylation in Escherichia coli L. form NC-7

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to examine protein phosphorylation in the Escherichia coli L-form extracts and characterize the phosphoproteins involved in L-form structure using anion exchange chromatography. L-forms are bacteria incapable of developing cell walls and bounded only by a cytoplasmic membrane. Results revealed the phosphorylation of the 80kDA phosphoprotein Tyrosine Protein A and a calcium-specific 40 kDa protein. Kinase activities were responsible for the phosphorylation of a 19kDa protein, Dps, and a 14kDa protein known as YfiD.

Investigation of space flight effects on Escherichia coli and a proposed model of underlying physical mechanisms

Article Abstract:

The effects of space flight on Escherichia coli on each phase of microbial growth and its underlying mechanisms were investigated. Space flight experiments were performed using in-vitro suspension cultures of E. coli aboard seven US Space Shuttle missions. Findings have shown the following: the lag phase was shortened, the duration of exponential growth phase was decreased, and a higher final cell population density was attained. A cumulative effect of gravity maybe essential on suspended cells via their fluid environment.
